The Gamebiz Interview

An interview was held between Gamebiz and three of the key figures in the production of Jumputi Heroes to mark the milestone of reaching 100 series.

Interviewees

  • LINE “Jumputi Heroes” producerSho Fujikawa [Left]
  • Shueisha “Weekly Shonen Jump” Editor-in-Chief of MediaKohei Onishi [Center]
  • Shueisha “V Jump / Saikyo Jump” Editorial DepartmentTaiki Uchida [Right]

[Gamebiz Interviewer]: Thank you for your time today. First of all, can you please tell us what each of your roles are in the production of Jumputi Heroes.

Fujikawa: My name is Fujikawa, I am the producer in charge of Jumputi Heroes. I’ve been involved with Jumputi since November 2019. I oversee decisions regarding how series are handled in-game, plans for future content and the specifics of in-game policies.

Onishi: My name is Onishi, I am the Editor-in-Chief of Media for Weekly Shonen Jump. Since I was in charge of overseeing the 50th Anniversary project for Weekly Shonen Jump, I am involved in the production of Jumputi Heroes.

Uchida: My name is Uchida from the V Jump / Saikyo Jump Editorial department. Onishi and I work together to supervise Jumputi on behalf of Shueisha and are involved in consultations about new projects.

[Gamebiz Interviewer]: I think this is the first game to handle more than 100 series, even in a game based on Weekly Shonen Jump. Please tell us about your work and the circumstances leading up to Jumputi reaching this milestone.

Uchida: There have been many games in the past such as Famicom Jump: Hero Retsuden (1989) and Jump Ultimate Stars (2006) that have gathered characters together from Weekly Shonen Jump.

Jumputi, which was released in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Weekly Shonen Jump is a managed Smartphone Game. As such, new characters and series are added regularly with more and more joining as time goes on.

I think the fact that there are many characters from multiple different series being added frequently, is appealing to players in a way that has not been seen in the ensemble games of Weekly Shonen Jump so far.

Fujikawa: The series handled by Jumputi includes popular titles such as Dragon Ball and One Piece. In addition to those major titles, a selection of series have been added so that players of a wide range of generations can enjoy each new update for the game. In many cases, decisions regarding the inclusion of new series are settled by looking at the results of user surveys that have been conducted in the game or by compiling the input of fans on social media.

Speaking of which, fans were very vocal about two series in particular, those being Psyren and Buso Renkin. After performing well in a player survey, these two series made their appearance during Jumputi Valentine’s 2021. Since the theme of the event was Valentine’s Day, the heroines of each series appeared as new characters. However, many people have asked for the main character to be added as well.

Regarding that point, first of all, Kazuki Muto, the main character of Buso Renkin, will appear during this 100 series celebration. Additionally, we are planning for Buso Renkin and Psyren to get a Feature Festival in the future, so please look forward to it!

[Gamebiz Interviewer]: Please tell us what you value when it comes to incorporating the uniqueness of Weekly Shonen Jump into Jumputi.

Onishi: LINE are aware that this game doesn’t represent a single title such as Dragon Ball or One Piece, rather, it’s a game that represents a magazine called Weekly Shonen Jump.

By taking characters from so many different series and bringing some similarity to their character design in this smaller form, I think that the game can give you the feeling of what makes Weekly Shonen Jump so special.

Onishi: In terms of the story, I think that having a game where players are working together with friends to defeat powerful enemies is the best way to capture the essence of Weekly Shonen Jump. However, because of this, it can be a bit difficult to find what kind of role can be given to characters in genres such as romance, comedy or sports.

Fujikawa: As Mr. Onishi mentioned, we want Jumputi to value the all-star feeling of Weekly Shonen Jump. On the other hand, when characters from many different series appear, there is also the problem that the story of each work is inevitably diminished.

Many users wanted to enjoy an event that digs deeper into the story of a series, so we started holding events called Feature Festivals that focus solely on one series. Feature Festivals have been well received by users and continue to be the main events of Jumputi.

Uchida: Many young readers of Weekly Shonen Jump don’t know much about series that have been published in the past. So I realized that Jumputi is a good opportunity for them to learn about older titles from Weekly Shonen Jump.

As part of the project to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Weekly Shonen Jump, I feel that Jumputi has become a landmark game that conveys the history and awesomeness of the magazine.

Fujikawa: For example, by holding a Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo Feature Festival right after the Kimetsu no Yaiba Feature Festival, users are introduced to the charm of a series, that they may be less familiar with, as they “pass the baton” from event to event.

We are very conscious of the handling of series in regards to different genres and ages. The whole team is delighted to have the opportunity to convey the charm of Weekly Shonen Jump through Jumputi Heroes.

Uchida: It’s a game that’s enjoyed by many people regardless of age or gender. I think that it’s the best game made for this magazine so far, in that it has been enjoyed by so many people for such a long time.

Also, I am very grateful that we have a lot of enthusiastic fans. When I am doing in-person events such as Jump Festa, I often get a lot of questions about Jumputi. (laughs)

[Gamebiz Interviewer]: Please tell us the important points regarding the supervision of Jumputi Heroes.

Uchida: The most important part of the supervision is scrutinizing the characters before release. We have to pay close attention to make sure that the movements and lines do not deviate too much from the original characters. Whilst keeping that in mind, we need these characters to still feel unique to the game, the final product needs to be something that could not be reproduced in the manga.

Onishi: For example, depending on how much we need to change the character’s appearance to match the Jumputi style, we may have to make choices such as whether we need to increase the number of lines or soften some of the finer details.

We also need to make decisions about, not only which part of the story to focus our event on, but also, which characters and specific moments should be featured. We hope that the events we produce get players excited about the series itself.

Fujikawa: In terms of management, the way each event plays out will change depending on who the planner was for that event. For example, in the case of a One Piece event, the person who is most familiar with One Piece will take the lead and will be in charge of making the event plan.

I think that the most important thing about Jumputi is love for the series, so the way we switch project leaders from event to event is probably very different to how it is handled by other games. On the other hand, there are times when love is too strong and it can cause some problems with production, it’s important to find a balance, so it’s my job to address these issues as they come up and work on them with other members of the team.

Onishi: Speaking of the difficult parts of supervision, Jumputi handles more than 100 series, which means that there are also 100 people in charge of supervision. Therefore, it is necessary to explain the contents of the game to each person in charge and then have them check all the character designs.

Fujikawa: Since it is necessary for each of the 100 people in charge to supervise, we communicate with each other almost every day. In addition, we have set up a place for a debriefing session every month to talk about the current situation and future policies of Jumputi.

If both parties have no qualms about the content plans, the planner will start production under the supervision of each party. If the final production plans are approved, we will begin the design and implementation phase.

[Gamebiz Interviewer]: Are there any other difficulties that you think you would only face while making Jumputi?

Fujikawa: Not to mention the series selection process, I am always worried about which moments from each series should make their way in.

Those who follow the original story in Weekly Shonen Jump every week are looking forward to the latest story and characters being implemented in the game, but we fear that this could be perceived as spoilers by the players who only watch the anime… It is quite difficult to create a project that both types of users can enjoy.

Fujikawa: However, there is one answer I came up with, in my own way, that is satisfying for both types of users. Due to various outside factors, there are times where the anime will need to omit certain stories that were present in the manga. For example, the Goldy Pond arc from The Promised Neverland and the Inheritance Ceremony arc from Katekyo Hitman Reborn.

When we covered these stories in Jumputi, we received many positive comments from fans of both series. I think that covering these sorts of stories is something important for us to do with Jumputi.

Since each series has a wide range of releases through different mediums such as anime, movies, theatre and video games, I am aware that I have to make a point of considering our approach differently from what already exists.

[Gamebiz Interviewer]: Please tell us about your future efforts for Jumputi and the series you will handle.

Fujikawa: We would like to add new series beyond these 100 and we also want to put a focus on series that have already been added to Jumputi but have not yet had their own Feature Festival.

Recently, we are grateful to see some mangaka have posted on social media “I wonder if my work will appear in Jumputi”, in regards to this, we are looking to consult with Shueisha and decide on which series to be implemented in the future.

[Gamebiz Interviewer]: Finally, do you have a message for users?

Fujikawa: I’m very happy to be able to celebrate reaching 100 series, it’s a milestone that could only be possible with Jumputi. We’ve received a lot of support from the players who have played since launch, players who have started recently, and even the mangaka themselves who I have been informed are also playing and enjoying Jumputi. Despite being the source for the original works, many of them have become players too!

The development and management team will continue to work harder than ever so that all players can continue to enjoy Jumputi in the future. Thank you for your continued support.

Onishi: The other day, Kōji Ōishi, the author of Inumarudashi, tweeted “I want Inumaru-kun to be included in Jumputi Heroes”. I was also in charge of Inumarudashi a long time ago, so I’d like to see Inumaru-kun appear in Jumputi someday too. (laughs)

Onishi: I would like to continue to work together with Weekly Shonen Jump and Jumputi to make exciting content that players and readers will enjoy.

Uchida: I’m really grateful to all the users who have been playing Jumputi Heroes for these three years and I’m very happy that they have come to like Weekly Shonen Jump as a result of this. We hope that you will continue to enjoy both Weekly Shonen Jump and Jumputi.
